Christmas break

That's it for this year and we resume training on Wednesday 8th January.
Summertown have asked to postpone the game scheduled for 5th January as they won't have many of their players back at Oxford.
The postponed games have now been rearranged and they are listed to the right. You may notice there is a six week gap between our two last games. I've pointed this out to the league and will let you know their response.
In the meantime have a great Christmas and we'll see you all refreshed in the new year.

CM v Wantage Town

15th December   home   result 2-3   half time 1-2
Scorers for CM   Mitchell Larman   Jack Hitchen   Connor Penfold

Cumnor Minors got back to winning ways with a victory away to Wantage Town.
The start was delayed by 10 minutes as the appointed referee called in sick. Andy Plaistow deputised in the last minute with his third game of the day.
The game kicked off with a strong, blustery wind diagonally across the pitch with Cumnor facing the wind in the first half.
It was a great start for Cumnor, they got  a corner with their first attack and Connor Penfold's excellently lofted outswinger was bundled in by Mitchell Larman on the far post. This meant Cumnor were 1-0 up in the first two minutes.
They incredibly doubled their lead after just 7 minutes when a shot from Mitchell was deflected by a Wantage player; it looked like it was going in the goal but Jack Hitchen took no chances and buried it from a yard out.
Both teams then struggled with the conditions, the wind was a dominating factor and the pitch was not in the best condition making it awkward to pass on the floor.
Wantage pulled one back after 35 minutes when Charlie Bennett was judged to have fouled in the penalty area. The resulting penalty was blasted down the centre giving Kane no chance.
The half finished 2-1 to Cumnor. Pete's half time talk told the players to keep working as they had in the first half as playing down the slope with the wind should result in more goals.
The conditions worsened as the wind got heavier and although Cumnor pressed the Wantage goal they could not get the two goal cushion.
It was Wantage who scored with a breakaway after 65 minutes when a good low cross from the right found their number 9 who slotted home comfortably making it 2-2.
This galvanised Cumnor into action and following sustained pressure after 75 minutes Connor hit a sweet shot low to the keeper's right restoring their lead.
The weather deteriorated further later into the game with driving rain adding to the wind. Cumnor players were delighted to hear the referee's final whistle in the glom of the winter late afternoon.
It was a good solid performance by all Cumnor players with a deserved win in tough conditions. Mitchell Larman and Ben Scrivener both had promising full team debuts with Mitchell's first fifteen minutes proving to be the difference between the sides.

CM v Garsington Youth

8th December   home   result 1-2   half time 0-2
Scorer for CM Robbie Catling

Cumnor suffered another defeat in the league but it could have gone either way.
The game started disastrously for Cumnor as they let in a soft goal in the first minute. A harmless cross fell to Garsington's Keiron Smith who scuffed his shot but it bobbled past the off-balance Kane Slaymaker.
The half continued with Garsington creating more of the chances and in the 30th minute Tom Weir doubled their league with a well taken header directly from a corner.
This meant the half finished 2-0 to Garsington.
Pete's half time talk reminded the players the game was not beyond them and to keep battling away.
The second half was a marked contrast to the first with Cumnor doing most of the attacking. They were rewarded with a goal in the 55th minute when Mitchell Larman, making his debut, slotted the ball beyond the outstretched keeper's left hand.
Cumnor continued to apply pressure on Garsington desperate for the equaliser but some last ditch defending and a couple of quality saves by their keeper meant the score remained 2-1.
It was a disappointing result but a good performance by Cumnor. The games against Garsington have always been tight and this time it was Garsington who emerged the winners.

CM v Hook Norton

1st December 2013   away   result 5-1   half time 2-0
Scorer for CM Robbie Catling

The game kicked off in overcast weather with virtually no wind and the pitch was in reasonable condition.
It was fast paced for the first period with both teams creating chances. Zak did well to beat a defender when put through by a long ball from Jack Hitchen but his shot went just wide. Kane, playing for the first time on pitch instead of in goal, tried a great volley 20 yards out but that also went just wide.
It was Hook Norton who broke the deadlock after 20 minutes with an opportunistic goal 5 yards out.
They doubled their lead 10 minutes later with a shot from the centre spot just going inside the right hand post.
This meant the half finished 2-0. Pete's half time talk reminded the players they created more chances than Hook Norton and were still in the game.
Unfortunately it was Hook Norton who further increased their lead after 60 minutes following a defensive mix up.
Cumnor's hopes were raised after 73 minute when Robbie pulled one back from about a yard out after Jack Hitchen's close range shot was stopped on the line. These hopes were soon soon snuffed out with a fourth goal for Hooky. Cumnor's defence was in disarray and they let in a fifth after 80 minutes. Fortunately Cumnor managed to steady the ship  and the game finished 5-1 to Hook Norton.
It was a game to forget for Cumnor, a below par performance and some uncharacteristic poor defending. Hook Norton were the better, more organised, team and deserved their win.
Amongst it all there was some good performances for Cumnor, Zak worked hard at front chasing down everything, Jack Hitchen and Kane played well in midfield and Robbie got yet another goal.
Cameron Craig gets man of the match for running tirelessly throughout against a good and occasionally combative defence.
