A break from training

There's no training tonight (Wednesday 23rd October). We haven't got a game until 17th November and Fogwell Road is probably under water thanks to the recent storms.

CM v Theale Tigers

20th October 2013   home   result 3-4   half time 0-1
Scorers for CM   Robbie Catling (2) Jack Bowler

This was a Berks & Bucks Cup game against Theale Tigers U17s who are in the premier division of the North East Hants Youth League.
The game began in driving rain with the wind blowing across the pitch. Cumnor were fielding a strong side except their regular keeper who was absent, so captain, Ben Whitehead, offered to go in goal in his place.
It was an even battle in the opening minutes with both sides getting used to the conditions.
Theale opened the scoring after seven minutes when their No. 9 broke free and was one on one with the Cumnor keeper. They both collided heavily after the Theale player managed to poke it beyond Ben's reach. Unfortunately Ben was concussed in the collision and was unable to take any further part in the game. Connor Penfold stepped up to take the keeper's spot.
The game continued with Cunmor striving for the equaliser and much of the play was in Theale's half. Jack Hitchen nearly grabbed an equaliser but his shot was well saved by the Theale keeper. Theale had their chances and Connor made a great save denying their no. 9 a second goal. It was difficult for both teams to play any decent football in the appalling weather conditions and the half finished with the score at 0-1.
Pete's half time talk told the players to take encouragement from the first half display and if they kept battling away they should get something out of the game.
The second half began well for Cumnor and they got back on level terms almost straight after the break with Robbie Catling heading home from a Conrad Deer cross from the right.
Both teams battled for the winner and it was Theale who scored next after 55 minutes when a corner wasn't cleared and one of their players stabbed the ball home from close distance.
Cumnor kept their heads up and created chances to get back on level terms but a Theale free kick at 80 minutes from just outside the area went straight in the goal, increasing their lead to 1-3.
Cumnor immediately threw caution to the wind and pushed forward to get back in the game and this allowed a breakaway goal through the middle of the pitch at 83 minutes by Theale increasing their lead to 1-4
This scoreline was unfair to Cumnor and they battled to get back into the game. After 85 minutes Jack Bowler restored some pride and raised hopes when he shot from just inside the penalty area when a mix-up followed a Cumnor corner, making the score 2-4.
Two minutes later Robbie Catling got Cumnor back into the game when he coolly slotted home from the centre of the penalty area after being put through by Conrad.
There followed a frantic 5 minutes as Cumnor poured forward going for the equaliser but it was not to be and the game finished 3-4.
It was a great cup game played in atrocious weather conditions and both teams can be pleased with their performances. Cumnor were unlucky not to get the equaliser but I suspect there were quite a few people, soaked to the skin, pleased there wasn't to be any extra time.
Man of the Match goes to Jack Bowler partly for his goal but mainly because he didn't put a foot wrong the whole game in a match where it's especially difficult for the defenders. Special mentions to Ben and Connor for both volunteering to go in goal at short notice. The report from Ben is that although he suffered concussion he will fine in a day or so, once the sore head eases!

CM v Oxford City

13th October   home   result 0-3   half time 0-1

This was a OIY Cup game against Oxford City U17s.
The rain that had been continually pouring since Saturday evening had softened the playing surface but it was still in surprisingly good condition.
Oxford City kicked of with the wind and rain at the their backs. It was an fast and furious first few minutes with both sides playing some good football. It began to settle down and Cumnor could claim the better of the chances with Conrad hitting the post after heading from one of Kane's humungous kicks from hand. It was ultimate route one football but nearly did the job! Zak, Robbie and Cameron Craig all worked hard at front but were unable to get that final touch.
Oxford City broke the deadlock after 38 minutes with a well taken goal when Timon Williams  shot from the centre of the D of the penalty area giving Kane no chance.
This meant the half finished 0-1 to Oxford City. Pete's half time talk asked the players to keep up the effort and we would have a good chance of getting back on terms.
The second half started evenly although few chances were created by either side with the driving rain and soft conditions tiring many of the players.
Jake nearly got Cumnor level with a speculative volley that went just wide and Oxford City managed to scrambled the ball free a couple of times when it bobbled around the penalty area.
It was an uncharacteristic error by Ben W that lead to City's second goal when he was to caught in possession allowing Joe Clayton to slot the ball passed Kane. To Ben's credit he didn't allow his head to go down and made some decent goal saving tackles and clearances after that.
Cumnor still pressed forward in attempt to get back into the game, creating chances but unable to convert any.
This rather exposed their backs and City scored a third with 7 minutes to go when Joe Clayton scored his second with a shot from a pass on the right wing.
The meant the match ended 0-3 with Oxford City going on to the next round.
Oxford City are a skilful footballing side and deserved their win, although the 0-3 scoreline was rather unfair on Cumnor who played some good football themselves and were unlucky with their chances.
Cumnor's Man of the Match goes to Conrad Deer who worked tirelessly in front of midfield covering an incredible amount of ground and helping to create many of those chances.

A big thank you to Westy who helped put up the goals in the pouring rain of the morning and to Connor and Sid who later helped with the nets. Another big thanks to Doug Craig and Simon Whitehead who helped put down the goals after the game.

Training on Wednesday

We are training as usual on Wednesday 9th October at Fogwell Road starting at 7pm sharp.
This week we will be concentrating on indirect free kicks and penalties

CM v Banbury United

6th October away result 1-2 half time 0-1
Scorer for CM Jack Hitchen (2)

The game began in warm autumn sunshine.
It was an even start with neither side able to put together any decent passes although Banbury played more confidently in the early stages without creating any clear cut chances. Cumnor struggled to get going and looked a disjointed side. The deadlock was eventually broken by Cumnor after 30 minutes when Jack Hitchen scored with a well taken strike giving their keeper no chance.
This meant the half finished 1-0.  Pete's half time talk lambasted the players for their poor effort and warned them if they didn't improve in the second half Banbury would win it.
The second half was dominated by a single incident. After 55 minutes Kane had the ball and when being pressed by a Banbury player he dropped it and picked it up again. The is not allowed and according to the laws of the game it should have resulted in an indirect free kick to Banbury. However to Cumnor's horror the ref awarded a penalty. Kane and other Cumnor players tried to point out his error but he would have none of it, pointing out he had been a ref for 15 years and knew the rules better than the players. This led to a booking for Kane and Connor Penfold. The penalty was taken and Kane made a superb save.
Ten minutes later Banbury equalised when Kane took a long free kick from the edge of the pitch, it fell to a Banbury player who immediately passed it forward to their striker who slotted home.
The penalty incident still clouded the game and the ref booked Ben Upjohn and a Banbury player for dissent.
The game eventually settled down and Cumnor pressed for the winner. They were rewarded after 75 minutes when Jack Hitchen scored his second with a well-taken shot from the right just squeezing in past the left hand post. Banbury strived for an equaliser but thanks some great saves by Kane and resolute defending Cumnor ran out the winners.
It was a scruffy game with Banbury playing much better football than their league position suggests. Cumnor should regard themselves lucky to have got the three points. Man of the match goes to Westy who again worked tirelessly down the right side of the pitch, rarely putting a foot wrong.
