Training on Tuesday 31st January - ON

Posted Sun 29th Jan:
We are due to train next Tuesday but the weather forecast is suggesting sub zero conditions so it is in jeopardy.
All updates will be post on here throughout the day.

Update Tues 3:30pm:
Training is on as the pitch should be playable. However as we don't have a game on Sunday it is optional.

CM v Banbury United

29th January 2012   Result 1-3 HT 1-1

Scorers for CM: Jamie Smith (2)   Ben Whitehead

This was the previously postponed match against Banbury who are near the bottom of the league but have recently got some decent results.
A few players were late for the game thanks to incorrect instructions from a member of the coaching staff, although he wrongly claimed to have sent an email with the new location. Apologies all round.
The game started at a frantic pace and Banbury were unlucky when a close range shot hit the bar following a cross from a corner. It then settled to an evenly matched contest with both teams unable to gain control.
It was left to Jamie Smith to break the deadlock after 20 minutes with a crisply struck volley from 20 yards to give us the lead.
Banbury equalised soon after with a well taken header from a corner.
The first half finished 1-1 which was a fair reflection of the game so far.
We started brightly in the second half and after 52 minutes Ben Whitehead scored with a powerful header from a Jamie Smith cross.
After 70 minutes Jake Gerring was fouled just outside the area on the left when going for goal, with the Banbury player getting booked. Jamie Smith scored directly from the resulting free kick when his shot went straight through a crowded penalty area.
We had a couple of extra chances towards the end of the game with both Robbie Catling and Joff Stimpson going close but the game finished 1-3.
Daniel West was unanimously voted man of the match with another great performance at right back.
Many thanks to Kane Slaymaker for doing an excellent job running the line giving Nick Penfold a well deserved rest.
Banbury proved to be much tougher opposition than their league place suggests, we did well to get our fifth consecutive victory and secure second place in the league.

Advance notice of game on 12th February

Our home game against Northway is on 12th February which is one of the half term holiday weekends. If anyone cannot make this date please let us know as soon as possible.
Many thanks.

Training on Tuesday 24th January - OFF

We are training as usual on Tuesday, 7pm at Fogwell Road ahead of our game at Banbury on Sunday 29th.

The weather forecast isn't too clever but unless the pitch is under water training will go ahead.
I will endeavour to confirm on here at around 3pm but no news means it's on.

Update 2.45pm: I've been to look at the pitch, there's too much standing water and the pitch is really churned up, so we're going to have to cancel training.

Sorry about that and see you all on Sunday

CM v Northway 22nd January Postponed

Our game against Northway on Sunday 22nd has been postponed to make way for their cup game.
It's been re-arranged for 12th February - details to follow.

Training on Tuesday 17th January OFF

The weather is predicted to warm up slightly on Tuesday so it looks like our training will be on. It's the usual - 7pm at Fogwell Road.
But if it's still cold on Tuesday keep an eye on here, first place for news.

Update 4pm Tuesday: Following a pitch inspection by Pete, training has been called off. It's not too bad on the surface but too hard to take a stud so there's a real risk of injury. It's only bound to get worse this evening and the sensible decision is to cancel.

Possible friendly Sunday 15th January

Update Wednesday 11th Jan
I spoke to the Ducklington manager saying we are keen to play a friendly on Sunday as arranged. He will get back to us this evening to let us know if they can make it. I'll post on here as soon as I hear from them.

Update Wednesday 9.47pm
I've just heard from Ducklington and they can't make the friendly. I suspect it's too late to arrange anything with another team so it looks like we've all got a rest on Sunday.

Update Thursday 2pm
I've made a couple of enquiries but it's rather short notice for other clubs. It's also been pointed out there's sub-zero temperatures predicted for the weekend so the pitch may well be unplayable.

See you all on Tuesday for training.

Training on Tuesday 10th January

We are training as usual on Tuesday, 7pm at Fogwell Road.
There's no game on Sunday but we are looking to see if we can get a friendly arranged although it is rather short notice.
Updates will be posted on here

CM v Ducklington

8th January 2012   Result 1-2 HT 0-0

Scorers for CM: Jim Whitelock   Jamie Smith

This promised to be a mouth watering match featuring second against third following a 1-1 draw earlier in the season.
The game started off with our usual onslaught on the opponent's goal with unfortunately the same inability to put the ball in the net. Not through lack of skill or effort but some solid goalkeeping and a couple of shots that went just wide. The goalmouth was in a poor state mainly due to a game being played just before ours which didn't help.
Jamie, Max, Conrad and Jake all went close and on another day we would have been two or three up at half time. Duclkington were resolute in defence but I can't remember them getting a chance in the first half.
The first half finished 0-0 and Pete had a simple half-time talk. It went something like "I can't believe we haven't scored, so just keep on doing what you are and the goals will come".
Ducklington improved after the break but on 55 minutes we got our long awaited goal. A 20 yard shot by Obaida Mohamedi was palmed out by the keeper to give away a corner. The resulting cross from Jamie Smith was superbly headed inside the near post by Jim Whitelock when he rose above the rest in a crowded penalty area.
Would the floodgates open for more? While we were thinking just that Ducklington equalised two minutes later. It was a breakaway and a mix up in defence, but the atrocious conditions in the goalmouth that stopped us scoring in the first half helped present Ducklington with their goal.
This raised Ducklington's game and it looked as if they might just snatch victory after being under the cosh for so long. Only some good defending and a couple of great saves by Connor Penfold meant we were able to continue searching for the winner.
We still created chances but you couldn't help feeling the game was going to peter out to a draw. Thankfully Jamie Smith had other ideas and his 20 yard rasping shot from the centre of the pitch beat their keeper just inside his left post to give us the victory that seemed out of our grasp.
The second half had a couple of highlights - Jim Whitelock's run from virtually his own penalty area when he drifted past three of their players. He got into their penalty area and instead of taking a shot for certain goal of the season he unselfishly passed to Conrad "because he was in a better position to score". Ben Everley had a strong second half up front and should have been rewarded with a goal.
So it ended 2-1 to Cumnor and although Ducklington battled well, especially in the second half, I think it's fair to say we deserved our win.
All should be pleased with their performance, you can see why they were third in the division as they never allowed us to completely dominate the game. It was good to see Ben Whitehead return as captain although Jim played well in defence in his absence.
Man of the Match goes to Jamie Smith for his usual tireless display and of course saving the day with his great goal.
Many thanks yet again to Nick Penfold for his also usual excellent performance running the line with some key decisions in the second half. Mind you he spent most of the first half watching the action in the other half of the pitch, although as he claimed he did have to run up and down a lot.

Rearranged fixtures

Our postponed fixture away to Banbury United is now at 2pm on the 29th January.
The fixture at home to Radley Youth has been moved to 26th February. I'm not sure why there is such a large gap to this game after Banbury. We'll investigate and see if we can get it moved back a week or so.

Next game away to Ducklington

Our next game is on Sunday 8th January away to Ducklington, kick off 2pm. Their ground is at Glebelands Playing Field, Standlake Road, Ducklington, Witney, OX29 7UX. Please be there by 1.15pm.
If you would like a lift we are leaving Elms Parade at 12.45pm, please let us know so we can make sure there are enough spaces.
This should be good game against the team that is third in the league and one of only two we haven't beaten this season, drawing our previous game 1-1.

Back to training on Tuesday

I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas break
We're back training at 7pm on Tuesday 3rd January at Fogwell Rd ahead of Sunday's game against Ducklington.
