CM v Wantage Town

5th May   home   result 9-3    half time 5-0
Scorers for CM   Jamie Smith   Ben Whitehead (2)   Cameron Craig (2)   Conrad Deer   George Thomas   Robbie Catling   Jack Hitchen

This was the last game of the season and as the league had already been won it was an opportunity for players to enjoy themselves with no pressure to get a result.
The game kicked off in warm sunshine with virtually no wind. Cumnor soon pressed the Wantage goal.  Jamie Smth opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a great hooked lob shot from the right hand corner of the penalty area giving the Wantage keeper no chance.
After 20 minutes Cumnor were awarded a penalty when a Cameron Craig shot on goal was saved by the arm of a Wantage defender. Ben stepped up to take the penalty. His shot low to the keeper's right was well stopped but Ben coolly struck in the rebound.
It was then one way traffic and Cameron Craig scored after 28 minutes latching onto a lovely through pass by Jack Hitchen.
Conrad Deer added a fourth at 33 minutes taking the ball into the penalty area and shooting to the keeper's left. George got on the scoresheet after 40 minutes with a well taken opportunistic shot.
This meant the half finished 5-0.
In the second half Cumnor made wholesale positional changes, giving various players the opportunity to try different playing positons. This including keeper, Kane going up front with Ben in goal and Jamie Smith as centre back.
The half started well for Cumnor with Robbie Catling almost immediately scoring with a shot from the  centre of the penalty area.
It became rather a goalfest with Wantage scoring two goals in quick succesion and Cameron Craig making it 7-2 with a great shot from the 20 yards out after 70 minutes.
George replaced Ben on goal and Cumnor made other experimental positional changes.
Wantage scored their 3rd after 78 minutes with a well taken shot high to George's right.
Ben added a 8th for Cumnor with a close range shot and Jack finished the scoring after 85 minutes with a close range header from a Conrad corner.
The game was played in good sprits and well done to Wantage for playing well under difficult circumstances. They never let their heads drop and contributed well with some good passing play.
Thanks yet again to John Hitchen for agreeing to run the line although I doubt it was one of his busiest games.
